As we round the corner on a full year spent in Sierra Leone,
we have some awesome news! That kitten that we got several months back who
makes weird noises and hates our 3 dogs? She’s not a kitten anymore. Now she’s
a proud mama of 3 tiny roly-poly little babies, all girls we’re pretty sure.
Here’s the story of Nimbus’s first litter: We had to go out
of town last week, just as Nimbus was getting too round to do a whole lot of
anything, so we left some money and the house keys with our friend S.P.Y. to
come up and give Nimbus a little fish each day, and to call us the second she
popped those little furballs out—but we didn’t get any news. When I finally came
home from Bo last Monday, S.P.Y. told me that Nimbus had not been in the house
the last time he brought food. She
actually didn’t come back until two nights later, and she came alone without
the big round belly.
When I saw Nimbus pop in the window at 11:30 one night, I
hoped that maybe she had delivered the kittens somewhere else and might bring
them to the house, but all she did was cuddle with me for a few hours and
disappear again. I tried not to worry,
but I was secretly afraid that she had miscarried. Then at 5 the next morning I heard the
unmistakable sound of newborn kitties—that super high-pitched mewing—and turned
on my flashlight to see two squirmy little kitties lying in the cubby of our
headboard with Nimbus looking oh-so-proud next to them. For a whole day it was just the two kittens,
and I forgot to prop the window open the second night, so when Nimbus finally
decided to go after her third kitten, she actually had to punch a hole in our
window screen to get out and back in. We woke up the next morning to the sight
of all 3 kittens and mama curled up in the cubby. Here they are! Even more photos to come I’m sure.
